How To Keep Your Back Pain Under Control ? Dentistry, Health and ...

If you are searching for tips on how to take care of your back pain then you need look no more because this is one of the best resources available. Read further and you should be more than satisfied with the advice given for how to take care of your painful condition.

Avoid or lose excess weight to relieve the strain on your back. Everyone has a target weight that is comfortable for your body and back to support. Every pound you add to that number increases the workload and pressure on your spine and body. Cut weight that exceeds this target range and your back will thank you.

Many back pain sufferers find that their chronic ailment is due to a lack of vitamin D, so make sure that you?re receiving a sufficient dosage to avoid a deficiency. Eating food items like fish, milk, breakfast cereals and other foods high in D vitamins will help you to stave off bothersome back pain.

If you already have a spinal injury and you are a smoker, we?ve got some bad news for you. Smoking is actually making it harder for your back to heal. Every time you smoke you are causing a diminished amount of oxygen to get to the spinal chord, and it needs all the oxygen to heal quickly.

When dealing with back pain, the first and utmost important thing to do is to consult your doctor and see what advice he has for you. Just because you think, it isn?t serious doesn?t mean it isn?t, get a professional opinion before you end up hurting yourself worse than you already did.

Sometimes back pain can creep into a pregnant woman?s precious sleep. If this is a problem for you, try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs, reducing pressure on the back and pelvis. A pillow under your growing belly can keep it from pulling your back forward, causing pain.

Strengthening your muscles is as important to healing from a back injury as it is to preventing future injury. That said, people already experiencing back pain should not engage in exercises that put undue strain on their injured muscles. For that reason, walking briskly every day is the best way to work through injuries while also working all the muscles in your body to prevent future injuries.

Quitting smoking can help to ease back pain. People who smoke, especially heavy smokers, do not have as much blood flow to the spine as those who don?t smoke. Without a sufficient amount of blood flow to the spine, your back will hurt.

Take pain medication when you first start feeling pain. Some people tend to ignore back pain, thinking that it will just go away, but the truth is that you?ll be relieved of the pain sooner if you take medication when you first start feeling it. Don?t wait to take your medicine; feel relief that much sooner.

Back pain can arise from any number of sources. It might be a complication, a result of overexertion or simply a problem that someone is naturally predisposed to. Regardless of its source, back pain is something that can be fought against. Reviewing good advice like that provided in this article, can be the first step in getting rid of back pain and enjoying a healthier spine.

(AP) ? The single line of Napoleon's secret code told Paris of his desperate, last order against the Russians: "At three o'clock in the morning, on the 22nd I am going to blow up the Kremlin."

By the time Paris received the letter three days later, the Russian czar's seat of power was in flames and the diminished French army was in retreat. Its elegantly calligraphic ciphers show history's famed general at one of his weakest moments.

"My cavalry is in tatters, many horses are dying," dictated Napoleon, the once-feared leader showing the strain of his calamitous Russian invasion, which halved his army.

The rare document ? dated Oct. 20, 1812, signed "Nap" in the emperor's hand and written in numeric code ? is up for auction Sunday at France's Fontainebleau Auction House.

The Napoleon code, used only for top-secret letters when the French emperor was far from home, aimed to stop enemies from intercepting French army orders. The code was regularly changed to prevent it from being cracked.

Napoleon must have dispatched his strongest horses and riders to carry the news: It only took three days to reach France's interior ministry ? 1,540 miles (2,480 kilometers) across Europe.

"This letter is unique. Not only is it all in code, but it's the first time we see this different Napoleon. He went into Moscow in 1812 at the height of his power. He returned profoundly weakened. In Moscow, the Russians had fled days before and burnt down the city. There was no victory for Napoleon, nor were there any provisions for his starving, dying army," says Jean-Christophe Chataignier of the auction house.

The only thing left for the weakened leader was to give the order to burn Russia's government buildings ? coded in the letter as "449, 514, 451, 1365..."

It is evidence of what historians call the beginning of the end of Napoleon's glorious empire, which started in Russia and ended at Waterloo three years later.

In June 1812, Napoleon's "Grand Army" ? at 600,000 men one of the largest in human history ? confidently entered Russia. But they were woefully unprepared for the harsh weather, the strong Russian defense and the Russian scorched-earth tactics, which left nothing behind to sustain the hungry and freezing French troops.

"This letter is an incredible insight, we never see Napoleon emotively speaking in this way before," says Chataignier. "Only in letters to (his wife) Josephine did he ever express anything near to emotion. Moscow knocked him."

In the text ? which announces that his commanders are evacuating Moscow ? Napoleon laments his army's plight, asking for assistance to replenish his forces and the ravaged cavalry, which saw thousands of horses die.

In September, 200 years after Russia's victory over Napoleon, the Kremlin held huge celebrations aimed at rousing patriotism among modern Russians. The highlight was a re-enactment of the battle of Borodino ? one of the most damaging clashes for Napoleon's troops ? which saw thousands in Russian and French military uniforms perform before several hundred thousand spectators.

The 1812 victory played an important role in Russia's emergence as a major world power. Until World War I, Napoleon's Russian campaign and the ensuing wars were the largest European military face-off in history.

The letter, which is accompanied by a second decoded sheet, is estimated to fetch up to ?15,000 ($19,500).

Geithner travels to Capitol for U.S. "fiscal cliff" talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, President Barack Obama's chief negotiator in talks to avert the "fiscal cliff," began a round of meetings with congressional leaders from both parties on Thursday amid signs the market-rattling uncertainty about the outcome could go down to the wire.

Geithner, accompanied by Obama's top legislative aide, Ron Nabors, met privately with Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid before heading across the Capitol for a session with Republican leaders of the House of Representatives.

That meeting was scheduled to include House Speaker John Boehner, Leader Eric Cantor, Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan - fresh off his Republican vice-presidential campaign - and the chairman of the House's tax writing Ways and Means Committee, Dave Camp.

The administration officials scheduled lunch with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell followed by a meeting with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

"The big meeting is Geithner's meeting with Boehner. That is what today is about," a top Democratic congressional aide said, adding Democrats and the White House were "on the same page."

The fiscal cliff's approximately $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts that would begin in 2013 would push the U.S. economy back into recession, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The immediate issue is whether the tax cuts that originated in the administration of President George W. Bush should be extended beyond December 31 for all taxpayers including the wealthy, as Republicans want, or just for taxpayers with income under $250,000, as Obama and his fellow Democrats want.

"It is not going to happen soon," Republican Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, the Senate's fourth-ranking Republican, said on Fox Business News on Wednesday of an agreement to avoid the tax hikes and spending cuts that will be triggered on January 1 without an act of Congress.

Despite a few cracks in Republican ranks, most notably from Republican Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, neither side has budged significantly from its position, leaving the markets and political analysts alike to grasp at wording nuances.

"I think unfortunately it seems pretty clear that the market is trading very much off the reading of the tea leaves on how these fiscal cliff negotiations are going," said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management Corp. in Chicago. "I think we're hostage to this for the rest of the year."

The post-election lame-duck session of Congress has made clear that until the two sides get over the immediate tax issue, they will not be able to move forward on the serious discussions they desire on longer-term deficit reduction and tax reform.

Keeping the nation in suspense down to a white-knuckled deadline has become the rule rather than the exception for Congress in recent years.

Whether the risk has been a government shutdown or, as in the events that led to the fiscal cliff, default for failure to raise the U.S. government's borrowing power, Republicans and Democrats have needed the pressure of time and possible disaster to bring them together.

Men at Risk of Prostate Cancer from Fizzy Drinks | TopNews United ...

A study that went on for a period of 15 years, taken out by a group of researchers from the Lund University, has uncovered a fact that even one soft-drink a day by men can increase their risks of developing prostate cancer. The review has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The team has been warning men who love to drink sugary soft drinks, since another fact from the study is that the risk is not of an early-stage disease. But, one is risked at getting aggressive prostate cancer, which does not get cured easily and causes symptoms.

Prostate cancer is commonly seen in British men and almost 41,000 people in Britain are affected by the same each year. Also, more than 10,000 people of them tend to lose their precious lives to the cancer. Though treatments for the same have improved, the number of cases and incomplete cure is still concerning.

It is therefore being suggested to avoid fizzy drinks daily. It has been told that even 300ml of such drinks a day, which is less than a standard canister, may increase the risks by 40%. "Further research on how genes respond to different diets would make it possible to tailor food and drink guidelines for certain high-risk groups", said Prof. Isabel Drake.

F-Droid is the FOSS application store for your Android phone

F-Droid

One of the cool things about Android is the open market model. The folks at Google don't mind at all if you sideload apps, or use your phone to build apps of your own, or even if you install a whole separate application market. That's the real meaning of open when you hear the word being tossed around so freely. Because the platform is open, we get to see things like F-Droid.

F-Droid is a third party application "store" that hosts FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) in a repository for easy installation and updating. The repo is full of open-source software written under a variety of licenses, but all nice and FOSSy enough to please most any die-hard fan.

Having it laid out all nicely this way offers a few benefits as well. You can choose which version of an app to install, track which FOSS apps you have installed, and turn on update notifications right in the app settings. It's an excellent way to manage things, and closely mimics software repos from popular desktop Linux distributions. Even the F-Droid app itself is FOSS and licensed under the GPLv2+.

Of course we can't mention any third party application centers without thinking of security. F-Droid tackles this in a pretty novel way. Developers can upload a pre-built apk file, but the preferred way is to upload the source. F-Droid then builds an signs the code, creating an apk file they guarantee is 100% derived from the source code anyone can look through. Community oversight has long been a staple of the FOSS world, and when source is readily available you'll find that very few shenanigans are tried. The guys and gal who can read the code will let everyone know if they find something shady. Everyone.

There's quite a few interesting apps in F-Droid, and I'm going to give it a spin. If you're a fan of FOSS, I recommend you do the same.

The perils of translational research

This is an updated and revised version of an article I wrote for the Lindau Meeting of Nobel laureates and Current Science magazine.

In 1969, one of the more memorable incidents in the public advocacy of science took place. The American physicist Robert Wilson was asked to testify before Congress in support of the construction of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, known as Fermilab. For Wilson, building this huge machine had been a labor of love and nobody had a better background for it. He had worked on the Manhattan Project where he was the youngest group leader in the experimental division, and after the war he had become a professor at Cornell University.

Wilson was a first-rate amateur architect who saw accelerators as works of art. He lovingly designed Fermilab with his own hands and, in order to add to the aesthetic appeal of the place, turned the surrounding acres into a wilderness housing bison and geese. His efforts paid off; Fermilab would become the largest accelerator in the United States and CERN?s primary competitor. In 1969 Wilson was asked to justify the expenditure for the multi-million dollar laboratory in front of Congress. The Cold War was raging, most research and especially physics research was being viewed in the context of national security, and Wilson was specifically asked what contribution the new laboratory would make to national defense. He replied in words that should be etched on the foundation stone of every center of basic research. The research, he said, had no direct bearing on national defense. Instead,

?It has only to do with the respect with which we regard one another, the dignity of men, our love of culture. It has to do with: Are we good painters, good sculptors, great poets? I mean all the things we really venerate in our country and are patriotic about. It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except to make it worth defending?.

It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except to make it worth defending. In saying these words, Wilson was appealing to the heart of what makes any country great. It is not the fancy cars, the shiny malls, the great financial houses and the cornucopia of industrial food that truly contribute to a country?s progress. At one point or another in history, Athens, Florence, Takshashila, Baghdad, Oxford, Gottingen, Copenhagen and Philadelphia were primarily known not for their wealth and the splendor of their monuments but for the unmatched wealth of ideas about science, art, economics, politics, freedom and human dignity that their citizens generated. These ideas are now the bedrock of much of modern civilization. Many of these ideas were solutions to practical problems, but most only sought to explore and push the boundaries of human creativity, curiosity, passion and tolerance. The creators and dreamers of these ideas were less concerned about their practical application and more concerned about their ability to answer questions about human origins and nature, our place in the cosmos and our relationship to other human beings.

Why am I retelling the story of Robert Wilson? Because I believe it strikes at the heart of what these days is fashionably called ?translational research?. Just like physics research was being viewed through the lens of national defense in the 60s, basic biomedical studies run the risk of being viewed through the lens of translational research in the 2010s. The approach is clearly not popular among leading researchers. In 2009, Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie gave a talk at the Lindau Meeting in which he described the great satisfaction he had gotten from doing non-translational research. Chalfie is not alone; last year I attended a lecture by another Nobel Laureate, Thomas Steitz. Steitz who won the prize for cracking open the structure of the ribosome proudly announced at the beginning of the talk that ?the only kind of translation I have worked on is that orchestrated by the ribosome?. And this week in Science magazine, Nobel Laureates Joseph Goldstein and Michael Brown lament the passing of the golden age of basic research at the NIH ? an era which produced nine Nobel Prize winners during a single decade. As Goldstein and Brown put it, ?translational research relegates basic science to a back burner?individual curiosity-driven science has been replaced by large consortia dedicated to the proposition that gathering vast amounts of correlative data will somehow provide an answer to life?s fundamental questions?.

So what is translational research? Many definitions seem to abound and Wikipedia seems to be as good a guide as any: ?Translational research is a way of thinking about and conducting scientific research to make the results of research applicable to the population under study and is practised in the natural and biological, behavioural, and social sciences?. The goal of translational research especially in medicine seems to transform basic biomedical research discoveries from ?bench to bedside?.

In the last few years this kind of thinking has has swamped the public discourse on science. New centers are being founded and funded whose mandate is to translate basic research into products directly benefiting humanity. The NIH, the largest biomedical research agency in the world, has also embraced a new National Center for Advancing Translational Research. The director of the NIH, Francis Collins, has not tired of pointing out the exciting advances in discovering new drugs which would be made possible by harnessing data from the human genome project. Not surprisingly, the press has eagerly jumped on the bandwagon, with reports pitching translational research and personalized medicine regularly appearing in the nation?s leading papers. Echoing leading scientists, the press seems to be telling us that we should all look forward to supporting translational research in its various guises.

All this makes the idea of translational research sound promising. And yet there must be a good reason why distinguished Nobel Prize winners like Chalfie, Steitz, Goldstein and Brown bristle at the mention of translational research. The reason is actually not too hard to discern. The problem is not with applied research per se. Nobody can doubt that applied research especially done by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries has saved innumerable lives in the last one hundred years. As Pasteur said, ?there is science and the applications of science?, and he saw them lying on a continuum. No, there is nothing wrong with trying to turn basic ideas into applied products.

What is wrong is that translational research is being seen as a panacea that will address the flagging rate of new biomedical advances. The thinking seems to declare that if only more people were given more money and deliberately focused on direct application, we would suddenly see a windfall of new therapies against disease. This thinking suffers from two major problems.

The first problem is that history is not really on the side of translational research. Most inventions and practical applications of science and technology which we take for granted have come not from people sitting in a room trying to invent new things but as fortuitous offshoots of curiosity-driven research. Penicillin was discovered through serendipity by a most alert Alexander Fleming who was trying to plate bacterial cultures, not one trying to actually discover the next breakthrough antibiotic. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (which in turn led to MRI) was discovered by physicists who were interrogating the properties of atoms using magnetic fields, not ones who were trying to find a method for determining the structures of organic and biological molecules. The discovery of most drugs built upon basic discoveries about human physiology and anatomy made by physicians and researchers who were simply trying to find more about how the body works. As Goldstein and Brown describe in their Science opinion piece, NIH scientists in the 60s focused on basic questions involving receptors and cancer cells, but this work had an immense impact on drug discovery; for instance, heart disease-preventing statins which are the world?s best-selling drugs derive directly from Goldstein and Brown?s pioneering work on cholesterol metabolism. Examples also proliferate other disciplines; the Charged-Coupled Device (CCD), lasers, microwaves, computers and the World Wide Web are all fruits of basic and not targeted research.

If the history of science teaches us anything, it is that curiosity-driven basic research has paid the highest dividends in terms of practical inventions and advances. Tinkering, somewhat aimless but enthusiastic exploration of biological and physical systems and following one?s nose have been the ingredients for some of the key inventions that have transformed our lives. Radar, computers, drugs, detergents, plastics and microwave ovens were all made possible not because someone sat down and tried to discover them but because they arose as fortuitous consequences of elemental, pure research. The hype of translational research not only deflects attention from curiosity-driven basic research but also creates the illusion ? and dangerously so especially in the minds of young scientists ? that asking people to discover new things is the best way to generate new ideas. In fact, trying to discover new things by forcing people to discover them will only siphon off funds from those who have the actual capability of discovering these things. This is especially damning for bright young researchers who are trying to survive in an increasingly straitjacketed research milieu.

The second more practical but equally important problem with translational research is that it puts the cart before the horse. First come the ideas; then come the applications. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with trying to build a focused institute to discover a drug, say, for schizophrenia. But doing this when most of the basic neuropharmacology, biochemistry and genetics of schizophrenia are unknown is a great diversion of focus and funds. Before we can apply basic knowledge, let?s first make sure that the knowledge exists. Efforts based on incomplete knowledge would only result in a great squandering of manpower, intellectual and financial resources. Such misapplication of resources seems to be the major problem for instance with a new center for drug discovery that the NIH plans to establish. The NIH seeks to channel the newfound data on the human genome to discover new drugs for personalized medicine. This is a laudable goal, but the problem is that we still have miles to go before we truly understand the basic implications of genomic data. It is only recently that we have started to become aware of the ?post-genomic? universe of epigenetics and signal transduction. We have barely started to scratch the surface of the myriad ways in which genomic sequences are massaged and manipulated to produce the complex set of physiological events involved in disease and health.

And all this does not even consider the actual workings of proteins and small molecules in mediating key biological events, something which is underlined by genetics but which constitutes a whole new level of emergent complexity. In the absence of all this basic knowledge which is just emerging, how pertinent is it to launch a concerted effort to discover new drugs based on this vastly incomplete knowledge? It would be like trying to construct a skyscraper without fully understanding the properties of bricks and cement.

Chalfie, Steitz and others like them are also right to criticize the frenzy that translational research generates in the popular press. We live in an age when buzzwords are eagerly generated and assimilated by the media. These buzzwords usually run roughshod over subtleties and ambiguities and the press seldom has a taste for indulging these in the first place. Needless to say, committing national resources and public attention to translational research when most of the basics are still to be understood is an endeavor fraught with great risk and uncertainty. It would be far wiser to bolster basic research that can bring us to the brink of real application. There are places where such research is conducted. They are called universities.

Ultimately, the importance of basic research goes back to what Robert Wilson said to Congress. It has to do with the same reasons that we created the Mona Lisa, painted the Sistine Chapel, built Chartres Cathedral, wrote The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and composed the Goldberg Variations. Da Vinci, Michelangelo, T. S. Eliot and Bach were all trying to find the essence of man?s soul and his relationship with the universe and with his fellow men. So were Einstein, Newton, Faraday and Darwin. They were not trying to invent a better mousetrap, but the world did beat a path to their door. Similarly, once our basic understanding of biological systems is firmly in place, translation will willingly follow. The next researcher, when asked to comment on the relevance of his or her basic studies in cell biology to translational research, should echo Wilson: ?It has nothing to do directly with translational research, except to enable it?.

Thorium To Be Tested in a Working Nuclear Reactor

A Norwegian company led by Alf Bj?rseth will start burning thorium fuel in a conventional test reactor owned by Norway?s government with help from U.S.-based nuclear giant Westinghouse.

Bj?rseth is now running his private company Scatec AS, and establishing new companies within Scatec based on the latest technologies in the areas of renewable energy and advanced materials, including a thorium fuel effort through a holding company called Thor Corporation.

Thor Corporation owns Thor Energy and also has shares in businesses related to thorium fuel, thorium mining and separation of rare earth elements.? Fen Minerals holds the mining rights to the Fen deposits in South Norway, which are rich in thorium and rare earth elements. The third company is Norwegian Separation Technology, a company in the process of developing a novel separation method for rare earth elements.

Thorium Ore
Natural Thorium Ore.

The company has completed a 2-year thorium fuel cycle feasibility study which concludes that thorium-based nuclear fuel has several advantages over uranium-based fuel, including better waste characteristics, improved proliferation resistance, and abundant raw material supply.

Related Article: Confidence in Nuclear Power is on the Rise Again

Thor Energy has established a consortium that will fund and run a 5-year thorium irradiation project to be conducted at the Norwegian government owned Halden Nuclear Reactor.? Halden, typically described as a ?test reactor,? also provides steam to a nearby paper mill. The move should bring thorium closer to replacing uranium as a possible safer and more effective nuclear power source.

Thor?s chief technology officer Julian Kelly explained Thor Energy will deploy a mix of solid thorium mixed with plutonium ? a blend known as ?thorium MOX?.

The plan isn?t the one most thorium enthusiasts have been hoping for.? Many professionals believe thorium?s advantages are most pronounced in alternative reactor designs such as molten salt reactors and pebble bed reactors, rather than today?s conventional solid-fuel water-cooled reactors.

Some thorium fans have realized it may be best to insert thorium into the energy scene by first putting it to use in reactors that already have regulatory approval.

Halden Heavy Water Reactor Flow Diagram.
Halden Heavy Water Reactor Flow Diagram.

Best or not, Thor is testing the thorium fuel in a conventional reactor at Halden cooled by ?heavy water?.? This is not the same as regular light water reactors built commercially around the world.? The cooling is by deuterium or water with an isotope of hydrogen.

Related Article: What Happens IF Cold Fusion Does Become Reality?

With plutonium seed in the fuel mix, the reactors would not only generate power, but they would also eliminate dangerous waste left over from other nuclear operations and thus help address the problem of what to do with that waste.

The consortium reaches pretty far.? Thor will fabricate some of its own thorium MOX in partnership with Norway?s Institute for Energy Technology. Britain?s National Nuclear Laboratory ? owned by the UK?s Department of Energy and Climate Change ? will also provide some, as will the European Commission?s Institute for Transuranium Elements.

Westinghouse is helping to fund the project, as are other of Thor?s industrial partners including Steenkampskraal Thorium Ltd., a South African company that is developing a thorium-fueled pebble bed reactor.? Other partners include the Finnish utility Fortum and the French chemicals company Rhodia.

That news ought to cheer all the thorium enthusiasts.

Yet Westinghouse doesn?t like to discuss its thorium activities publicly.? It is likely the firm believes working alternatives could undermine the company?s conventional nuclear business. Rumors have it Westinghouse has at least a few thorium-connected and alternative nuclear projects in the works.? One is out now and it isn?t a direct competitor as such.

Westinghouse is also known to be the commercial adviser on the U.S. Department of Energy?s collaboration with China on developing a molten-salt cooled reactor.? Westinghouse has also helped organize many of the alternative nuclear sessions at the American Nuclear Society convention just held in San Diego California.

This is great news worthy of Norway and her citizens.? The element thorium was named by the region?s ancestral God Thor, they have rich deposits, and a great deal of competency and intellectual prowess.? The test will very likely work out and that could offer reactor operators an alternative to uranium and ever more plutonium.

It will be fascinating to see the results.? The wait will be long though; it takes quite a while to burn through nuclear fuel.

Someone Is Trying To Kill Me!!!!!!!!!!!! - Articles of Health

The following story, "Someone Is Trying To Kill?Me," is a classic reminder that the quality and?quantity of ones life is in direct relationship?to ones daily lifestyle and dietary choices.??This is the message of Dr. Robert and Shelley?Young as they share their "New Biology"?and the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet.

Health and vitality is a consequence of choice?just like sickness and disease. When we begin?to see the truth that cancer, heart dis-ease,?diabetes, depression, heart attack, stroke,?low energy, pain, obesity, etc., are the
consequences of lifestyle and dietary choice?then maybe we will begin to stop doing cancer,?heart dis-ease, diabetes, etc. with our personal lifestyle?and dietary choices.

As stated so eloquently by Robert Louis Stevenson,?"There will come a time when we all sit down to the?banquet of our consequences."

"The cure for all sickness and dis-ease, including cancer will be?found in its PREVENTION NOT in its TREATMENT." Dr. Robert O. Young.

"If you want to be healthy, energetic and fit then you have?to make lifestyle and dietary choices that will bring?you those consequences," states Dr. Young.

"Life is all about choices that lead to consequences. ?We can choose health or we can choose sickness and?disease. With each thought, with every move, with?each word spoken and with every food or drink?ingested we determine the quality and quantity of?our life," warns Dr. Young.

And, now for our story . . . . . .

On the morning of his 42nd birthday, Crabwell Grommet?awoke to a peal of particularly ominous thunder.?Glancing out the window with bleary eyes, he saw?written in fiery letters across the sky: "Someone?is trying to kill you, Crabwell Grommet!"

With shaking hands, Grommet lit his first cigarette?of the day. He didn't question the message. You don't
question a message like that. His only question was,?"Who?" At breakfast, as he salted his fried eggs,?he told his wife, Gratia, "Someone is trying to?kill me."

"Who?" she asked with horror? Grommet slowly stirred?the cream and sugar into his coffee and shook his?head. "I don't know!" he replied. Convinced though?he was, Grommet wasn't going to the police with?his story. He decided that his only course of action?was to go about his daily routine and hope somehow?to outwit his would be murderer.

He tried to think on the way to the office but the?frustration of making time by beating red lights?and switching lanes occupied him wholly. Nor once?behind his desk could he find a moment, what with?handling phone calls, urgent emails, and the many?problems and decisions piling up as they did every?day.

It wasn't until his second martini at lunch that?the full terror of his dilemma struck him. It was?all he could do to finish off his Lasagna Milanese.?"I can't panic," he said to himself, lighting his?cigar. "I must simply live my life as usual." So he?worked until seven as usual, studied business reports?as usual, and took his usual two capsules of Seconal?in order to get his usual six hours of sleep.

As the days passed, Crabwell stuck fully to his?routine. As the months passed by, he began to take?a perverse pleasure in his ability to survive.?"Whoever is trying to get me," he's say proudly?to his wife, "hasn't got me yet. I'm too smart?for him." "Oh, please be careful," she'd reply,?ladling him a second helping of her tasty beef?stroganoff.

His pride grew and he managed to go on living for?years. But, as it must to all men, death came at?last to Crabwell Grommet. it came at his desk on?a particularly busy day. He was 53.

His wife demanded a full autopsy. But it showed?only emphysema, arterioscleorosis, duodenal ulcers,?cirrhosis of the liver, cardiac necrosis, a?cerebrovascular aneurysm, pulmonary edema, obesity,?circulatory insufficiency, and a touch of lung?cancer.

"How glad Crabwell would have been to know," said?the widow smiling proudly through her tears, "that?he died of natural causes."

The moral of this story can be found in the words?of Dr. Phil, "When we choose the behavior, we choose?the consequences."

Stocks cut losses to end the day mixed

5 hrs.

Stocks eased off their lows to close mixed Monday, but gains were limited as concerns over the "fiscal cliff" and Greece resurfaced.

?Going out and making big bets in any one direction is probably not fruitful until we get some kind of clearer road," said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management. But the good news is that [the fiscal cliff] is so big that they can?t just sweep it under a rug.?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 42.31 points, or 0.33 percent, to close at 12,967.37, led by AmEx and Coca-Cola . The blue-chip index was down more than 100 points in its session low.

The S&P 500 slid 2.86 points, or 0.20 percent, to finish at 1,406.29. The Nasdaq edged up 9.93 points, or 0.33 percent, to end at 2,976.78.

The CBOE Volatility Index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended above 15.

Among the key S&P sectors, telecoms and energy led the laggards, while utilities gained.

"Unfortunately for the last 10 days, with the House and Congress gone for the Thanksgiving recess... much progress hasn't been made," said Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat.?

Serious negotiations are expected to resume this week as policymakers return to Washington from the Thanksgiving holiday. Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been trying to convince the public that they are willing to compromise and can reach a deal before year end.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet with a second group of CEOs on Wednesday to discuss the deficit plan, according to the Wall Street Journal, two weeks after he met with a dozen chief executives including Jeff Immelt of GE and Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo.

"[The] pending U.S. fiscal restraint is likely to be hurdled by a late-year compromise, but that the expected agreement likely will only resolve the short-term fiscal cliff issue," wrote Citigroup in its latest research note.

U.S. stocks rallied more than 1 percent last Friday in a holiday-shortened session amid encouraging signs on the "fiscal cliff" and following some positive economic reports. Major averages soared more than 3 percent last week, logging their best weekly performance in more than five months.

Knight Capital shot higher after news that trading firms Getco and Virtu are pursuing purchase of the entire company. While exact financial terms of the deal is unclear, sources told CNBC that the price for Knight Capital will likely range between $600 million and $700 million.

Europe shares closed lower, dragged by financials, ahead of a meeting of Greece's lenders to decide when it will receive its next tranche of emergency funds.

Euro zone finance ministers, the ECB and the IMF plan are meeting in Brussels to finalize the second bailout package for Greece worth 31.2 billion euros ($40 billion).

Apple rose after Citigroup initiated coverage of the tech giant with a "buy" rating and a $675 price target. Separately, the iPhone maker said it is adding new Samsung devices to its patent-infringement lawsuit.

Facebook jumped after Bernstein upgraded the social-networking giant to "outperform" from "market perform" and raised its price target to $33 from $23. Despite the stock's 40 percent spike in the last three months, the company is still trading well below its IPO price of $38 a share.

Yahoo gained after Goldman Sachs added the Internet company to its "conviction buy list" and upped its price target to $24 from $22.

And Research In Motion was upgraded to "sector outperformer" from "sector underperformer" at CIBC World Markets. The brokerage also lifted its price target on the struggling BlackBerry maker to $17 from $8.

Google edged lower after the CEO of ICOA claimed that the press release announcing the search-engine giant has acquired the small tech company for $400 million was a "hoax," adding his firm has never been in acquisition talks.

A survey by the National Retail Federation showed a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the Black Friday weekend, up from 226 million last year. U.S. retail sales jumped an estimated 12.8 percent on the previous year over the four-day holiday weekend, according to the organization.

Amazon.com , Best Buy and Ebay traded higher.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart said it had its "best ever" Black Friday events, selling 1.8 million towels, 1.3 million televisions, 1.3 million dolls and 250,000 bicycles.

McGraw-Hill rallied after the publishing company announced it will sell its education business to Apollo Global Management in a deal worth $2.5 billion.

Patent Watch: Microfabricated Tools and Crystallization Plates

Microfabricated tools and crystallization plates: Proteins catalyze reactions, shape cells and relay signals through the body. To understand how they work, researchers first figure out proteins' 3-D shape. Part of that process involves crystallizing proteins on rectangular plates with hundreds of individual wells. Current tools for protein crystallization have flaws: tiny tools to manipulate the protein crystals are rigid, vibrate easily and can damage fragile samples. Frustrated with the fuss, physicist Robert Thorne of Cornell University developed new tools and plates.

Patent No. 8,210,057 describes tools formed from plastic film. A gentle curve in the tools lends them strength?they are thin without being floppy. This same strategy is used by leaves and petals in nature, Thorne notes. One of the tools has ?fingers? that can bend and gently grip protein crystals. Patent No. 7,666,259 details a new kind of protein crystallization plate, in which wells are replaced by micropatterned film. Drops stick to the surface even when the plate is upside down?held in place by surface tension from printed rings just 25 microns tall. The tools are already on the market, and the plates will be available later this year.

My Thoughts On Gold Investing As 2012 Ends - Seeking Alpha

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Interesting take on Gold Price Movement

I am looking at a chart from analysts from as far back is 2007 where they would forecast the movement of gold for the next five years. The pattern continues to be the same. Gold goes up a year or so and then falls in price. But what is interesting about this forecast chart is that analysts have been wrong since 2007. In 2007 forecasts called for gold to be under $600 an ounce by 2012. 2008 predicted it to be under $800 an ounce. And where is today's forecast? It is calling for gold to fall pretty drastically by 2014. If gold stays consistent with how it moves against forecaster expectations, 2014 could be a good investing year for contrarians in gold!

World View on Gold

China and India account for 47% of the world's demand for gold. Besides the Middle East and the U.S., the rest of the world accounts for another 41%. It wasn't long ago that China and India accounted for just 23% and the U.S. and Middle East accounted for twice what they account for today! Observing this pattern, it seems that what comes out of China and India will have more of an effect upon gold than what would be coming out of Washington these days. Considering Central banks have also become buyers of gold instead of sellers, should we be bullish on gold as investors?

The Deteriorating Economics of Mining Gold

Finding new high quality gold mines in the ground have become increasingly scarce. Quality has been lacking and finds are fewer. For this reason, they are more expensive and take longer to bring into production. So here is the present day scenario:

  • Gold stock assets may be of lower quality.
  • Governments are more aggressive in 'seizing the plunder' in the form of taxes.
  • Poor economic assets and stockholder returns.

So is it better just to buy the metal itself and stay away from the ETFs like GLD or gold mining stocks? So what are the catalysts to move gold mining stocks right now? Generally speaking, high commodity prices benefit the companies that mine them. But when looking at mining companies, one thing to consider is the project the company is exploring more than the present commodity price. If the project is projecting production to take place a few years out, present day commodity prices are not very helpful. What would be more important is the project and if it is meeting milestones along the way of the project. A good example of this would be the suspension of operations of the Pascua Lama-a giant open-pit gold, silver and copper mine being built in the Andes at the border between Argentina and Chile owned by Barrick Gold (ABX) recently for unsafe fine particles in the air. Not only is this one of a set of ongoing problems, but the miner's largest and most controversial project ever is now expected to cost as much as $8.5 billion, with first production expected not before mid-2014. Originally the projections were $3 billion in 2009.

Technically Speaking

The recent rise in GLD was typical and signals of a slowdown could be seen in its extended over bought position in the RSI indicator. As expected, it has backed off and found support just over 162. It slid down the Bollinger Bands, but now appears to be moving sideways and so do the bands. There is a mild chance that we might see a turnaround as both the RSI and MACD are journeying toward bullish territory, but it is too early to make an observation like that. Presently, GLD is moving sideways with a possible move back up, but I am not of the opinion that it will be strong.
