First German trading company to receive multiple certification from the German Society for Environmentally Sustained Construction (DGNB)
REWE Group will become the first German trading company to receive multiple certification (MNHA12) from the German Society for Environmentally Sustained Construction (DGNB) while attending the commercial real estate trade fair Expo Real in Munich. The multiple certification defines binding standards for all new construction realised in accordance with the REWE Green Building concept first presented in Berlin in 2009. It offers simplified, fast and low-cost verification procedures for future green buildings.
Dr Christian Mielsch, REWE Group Management Board member, will accept three additional pre-certifications from the DGNB for REWE Group construction projects in addition to the multiple certification for the concept of the REWE Green Building at the joint Expo Real stand (Hall C2, Stand 330): the national REWE Group warehouse in Neu-Isenburg (Gold), the PENNY Green Building in Offenbach (Gold) and the toom Baumarkt Green Building in Bebra (Silver).
?We are truly proud to receive four awards at once from the DGNB today. The certifications document our pioneering role in sustained construction and the operation of commercial properties. We view the certifications as confirmation and encouragement to continue the pursuit of our strategic approach. We will build and operate future stores belonging to REWE Group applying methods to preserve our environment and resources because sustainability is the guiding light of our actions,? stated Dr Christian Mielsch, REWE Group Management Board member.
Professor Werner Sobek, DGNB Vice President, emphasised: ?Sustained construction and operations require a solid foundation. In committing to multiple certification of its stores, REWE Group demonstrates that long-term commercial success and responsible conduct complement each other highly and build closely on each other. This makes REWE Group an important partner for the DGNB as we strive together to expand the idea of sustained construction to encompass a broad public.?
Martin Obermann, director of Holding Immobilien at REWE Group: ?Our buildings constructed in accordance with sustainable principles save at least 20% energy in comparison with conventional structures; the REWE Green Building in Berlin, in fact, consumes only half as much. So sustained construction does more than protect the environment; in the long run, it contributes to substantial cost savings.
In other words, cost orientation and success in competition thanks to sustainable conduct, not in spite of it. This is yet another aspect which means sustainability is not just a strategy, but rather a fundamental attitude of REWE Group, noted Obermann. ?Sustained construction at REWE Group is a mature procedure and has been defined as the minimum standard for all of the company?s expansion. This is an enormous lever which can be used to shift the entire real estate market in the direction of sustainability.?
The multiple certification arose from the REWE Green Building in Berlin which became the first supermarket in the world to be awarded the DGNB Sustainability Seal in Gold in 2009. Ecological, economic, socio-cultural and technical factors as well as process and location quality are appraised during the DGNB certification process. The pre-certificate describes a concrete target agreement regarding the sustainability aspects which serve as the goals. The final certificate is awarded at the conclusion of the project.
Multiple certification for the REWE Green Building concept
The REWE Green Building, opened in Berlin in 2009, is the winner of many awards and is the first supermarket that was planned and constructed strictly in conformity with the principles for an environmentally-friendly building. Heating, ventilation, lighting, cooling and refrigeration systems do not pollute the environment with CO2 emissions. Further special features include daylight architecture in combination with energy-saving construction techniques, best insulation, sustainable materials and the use of energy from renewable sources. The bottom line is that the Green Building Concept Store uses half the energy of a standard store. Using this REWE flagship project as the model, standards for future REWE stores realised in accordance with the Green Building concept have been developed. This led to the granting of the DGNB multiple certification for REWE Group, enabling simplified, fast and low-cost verification procedures for future Green Buildings.
REWE stores constructed in conformity with the Green Building concept receive a DGNB pre-certificate for the construction description on which they are based. REWE stores constructed on the basis of the pre-certified construction description are awarded the DGNB Certificate in Silver. The multiple certification applies as well to construction projects which are planned to receive the DGNB Certificate in Gold. Solely the special features of technology and construction in these projects must be verified. The company will seek to obtain the DGNB Certificate in Gold for the very next REWE Green Building being realised on the basis of the multiple certification. The sustainable REWE store will be opened in Hamburg in December 2012.
At this time, 19 REWE stores are being planned and constructed on the basis of the REWE Green Building Concept, of which one store will be realised with the DGNB Certificate in Gold in each of the six REWE regions.
Pre-certificate in Gold for the REWE Group warehouse in Neu-Isenburg
The construction of a national warehouse for dried food products and non-food articles in Neu-Isenburg will be certified with a DGNB pre-certificate in Gold.
The objective is to keep the harmful effects of the building on the environment at a low level. Substantially greater amounts of renewable energy will be used in the warehouse than is required by law for new construction projects. Electric power and heating will be generated with the aid of powerful photovoltaic modules, pellet heating and a combined heat and power plant fuelled with biogas. Sixty-five per cent of the heating requirements for the warehouse with a floor area of more than 72,000 square metres will be covered by renewable energies.
The warehouse?s connections to public transport and the intercity transport network are ideal. Transport routes are reduced to a minimum, lowering CO2 emissions. The more than 234,000 square metres of the warehouse construction site, previously an industrial location, first had to be made usable at great expense and with great effort.
The sustained construction project, which will start up operation in autumn 2014, includes a logistics structure for incoming goods, storage and outgoing goods as well as an administration area. About 360 people will be employed here in total.
During the construction of the new warehouse, the expenditures for the provision of drinking water and the treatment of waste water will be reduced. Fixtures to reduce water consumption will reduce the demand for drinking water. In addition, rainwater falling on the roof areas and the land will seep entirely into the soil of the warehouse site.
The building materials used in the construction of the new warehouse are produced using low-emission and sustainable methods. Responsible conservation of resources is also assured by the use of long-life and recyclable materials. The warehouse roofs are in part covered by plants or photovoltaic modules. The trees on the property have been preserved and additional trees have been planted as well.
Pre-certificate in Gold for PENNY Green Building in Offenbach
PENNY is aware of its responsibility to protect the climate. In autumn/winter 2013, PENNY will be opening its first Green Building, which will be awarded the DGNB Pre-certificate in Gold because of its sustained construction. The store, which will stand out as a striking structure from the surrounding buildings in Offenbach, combines a large number of diverse detailed actions to save energy using ground-breaking architecture. One example is the extensive plant cover on the wave-shaped roof. Daylight architecture provided by skylights and strip lighting helps to conserve energy. About one-third of the power demand of the store and its 845 square metres of floor area is provided by a photovoltaic plant on the roof.
Pre-certificate in Silver for toom Baumarkt Green Building in Bebra
toom Baumarkt has set itself three goals for protection of the climate and environment: increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions relevant for the climate and conserve resources. The opening of the toom Baumarkt in Nieder-Olm in February 2012 brought the company a great step forward in the realisation of its sustainability strategy. The Green Building in Nieder-Olm is Germany?s first DIY store to fulfil the requirements for the Certificate in Silver awarded by the German Society for Environmentally Sustained Construction (DGNB). The company?s second Green Building is currently being built in Bebra. The DIY store has been designed so that energy and the natural resource water are conserved during daily operation. Increased heat insulation, airtight construction design, heat recovery of more than 90%, own power generation using a photovoltaic plant and other sustainable aspects assure that the second toom Baumarkt Green Building meets the DGNB requirements so that it will also receive the Certificate in Silver.
The cooperative REWE Group is one of the leading trading and travel and tourism groups in Germany and Europe. The corporation realised total external sales in excess of ?48 billion in 2011.
